Jim Nunally, a native of the San Francisco Bay Area, is the third-generation guitar player in his family, following a father and grandfather who passed down a love for the instrument. Primarily a session musician,
Nunally was featured on the CBS television special Snoopy's Reunion playing the bluegrass guitar that seemed to be coming from the famous cartoon beagle. His participation on the album
True Life Blues: The Songs of Bill Monroe enabled him to share a Grammy Award for Bluegrass Album of the Year in 1996.
Nunally is also part of a guitar duo with
Dix Bruce that has resulted in the albums From Fathers to Sons, The Way Things Are, In My Beautiful Dream, and 2003's
Brothers at Heart.
Nunally is the lead guitarist and vocalist in
the David Grisman Bluegrass Experience, tours with
John Reischman & the Jaybirds, and leads his own San Francisco-based band, Due West. He released his debut solo album, Gloria's Waltz, on FGM Records on August 7, 2007; on it, he was joined by
Bruce, the
Grisman group,
the Jaybirds, and Due West, among others. ~ William Ruhlmann
