American conductor and violinist
Joshua Weilerstein is the product of a musical family, which includes his father, violinist Donald Weilerstein, his mother, pianist Vivian Hornik Weilerstein, and his sister, cellist
Alisa Weilerstein, who perform together as the
Weilerstein Trio. A Boston native,
Weilerstein began his career shortly after winning the Malko Competition for Young Conductors in Copenhagen, which led to an appointment as assistant conductor of the
New York Philharmonic. While working with that orchestra,
Weilerstein participated in Young People’s Concerts, and also served as concert master of the Discovery Ensemble, a chamber orchestra based in Boston that works with inner-city schools.
Weilerstein has been a guest conductor with major orchestras in the United States and Canada, and has developed important connections to several orchestras in Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, and Germany. For the 2015-16 concert season,
Weilerstein appeared with the
Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, the
San Diego Symphony Orchestra, the Naples Philharmonic, the
Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, the
Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, the
Philharmonia Orchestra, the
Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie, the
SWR Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra, the
Lahti Symphony Orchestra, and the
BBC Symphony Orchestra. As of 2016,
Weilerstein is the artistic director of the
Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne.
