Optic Sink is a minimal synth project headed by
Natalie Hoffmann of
Nots, along with fellow Memphis-based musician
Ben Bauermeister (
Magic Kids, A55 Conducta). The duo's self-titled 2020 debut is a raw, dystopian mixture of analog synth noise, racing drum machines, and monotonic lyrics inspired by classic sci-fi, Dadaism, and existentialist philosophy.
Natalie Hoffmann began making music as
Optic Sink in 2018, while
Nots were taking a break from touring in order to write their third album. She wrote songs using a four-track recorder, and began performing live with electronic percussionist
Ben Bauermeister. The two performed at Austin's SXSW festival in 2019, and they recorded their debut album at
Andrew McCalla's Bunker Audio studio later in the year.
Optic Sink was released by Goner Records in October of 2020. ~ Paul Simpson
