British organist and choral conductor Owen Rees attended St. Catharine's College, Cambridge, on an organ scholarship, and pursued graduate studies there with Peter le Huray and Iain Fenlon. Rees received his doctoral degree in 1991. At St. Peter's College and St. Edmund Hall, Oxford, he was a lecturer in music and was made a reader in 1996 at the University of Surrey's Department of Music. He joined the faculty of Oxford in 1997, and became a reader in 2006. Pursuing performance and research as mutually beneficial careers, Rees specializes in music of the Renaissance and early Baroque eras, concentrating on Spain and Portugal in the years between 1450 and 1650. He has edited works of Manuel Cardoso, Pedro de Cristo, and Duarte Lobo, and he has published studies on music by Cristóbal de Morales, Francisco Guerrero, and William Byrd. Rees is the organist of Queen's College, Oxford, and he directs several choral ensembles, including Contrapunctus, the Cambridge Taverner Choir, and the Choir of Queen's College, Oxford, and he has made recordings for Herald, Guild, Signum Classics, Avie, and Hyperion. He gives concerts and leads workshops on Renaissance polyphony, and he has appeared at music festivals, such as the Oslo International Church Music Festival, the Festival Internacional de Musica Portico de Semana Santa de Zamora, and the York Early Music Festival.
