PAINT is the project directed by
Pedrum Siadatian, guitarist for psych-garage revivalists
Allah-Las. The bands share a similar calm approach to psychedelic pop and garage rock, though
PAINT's sound is more home-cooked and happily odd, as evidenced on 2018's self-titled debut album and 2020's slightly more polished and collaborative
Spiritual Vegas.
Siadatian first began recording his
PAINT material following
Allah-Las' 2016 LP
Calico Review. Influenced by artists like
R. Stevie Moore,
Syd Barrett, and
Kevin Ayers, he teamed up with producer
Frank Maston to help capture his rough-hewn psych-pop missives. After contributing a track called "Land Man" to Mexican Summer's tenth anniversary compilation A Decade Deeper in September 2018,
PAINT's self-titled debut album was released in November. The lo-fi production and restrained psych feel calls to mind the sound of
Allah-Las, but
Siadatian adds some woozy singer/songwriter and hazy lounge music influences to the mix. His next step was to record another album with
Allah-Las (2019's
Lahs), then he and
Maston reconvened to work on a second
PAINT album. This time the duo welcomed contributions from
Jackson MacIntosh on guitar and bass, Nick Murray of
Oh Sees on drums, and fellow
Allah-Las' members
Spencer Dunham (bass) and
Matt Correia (percussion).
Spiritual Vegas expands
PAINT's sound by adding jazz and Middle Eastern influences, while also moving the fidelity into the mid-range. It was issued by Mexican Summer in July of 2020. ~ Timothy Monger
