Ponette is an electronic pop band from Oslo, Norway. Their debut EP titled I’m Alone was released in the fall of 2016. It contains four songs that combines catchy, yet delicate vocals and powerful lyrics with the energetic sounds from electronic drums, synthetic basses, floating guitars and textural synthesizers. While aiming for an uncompromising pop sound, the band draws inspiration from genres like postrock and shoegaze, putting accessible musical elements in a different perspective. Their expression can be described as dark, bleak and driving.
The EP is recorded and produced by the group itself, with mix and coproduction from the recording and mixing engineer Stefan Sundström, known for his work with Swedish pop artist Veronica Maggio. It is being released on the Norwegian indie label No Forevers, based in Trondheim. The track “Made of Blood” features as the single.
Even though the four songs are quite different from each other, there are also a lot of common features like the consistent presence of the identifiable guitar and synth sound. When describing the voice of Helene Svaland throughout the EP, the vocals have been referred to as a lonely, yet present element in the middle of a roaring storm. With a combination of extensive dynamics and multiple textures, Ponette is exploring the relationship between significant forcefulness and softness.
