Australia's
Xavier Dunn rose to popularity in the mid-2010s with a warm, laid-back sound that mixed lush indie folk with dreamy electronica reminiscent of
Bon Iver. A double threat known for his work as a multi-instrumentalist singer/songwriter and a producer,
Dunn made a splash with his 2016 covers EP,
BIMYOU, where he covered artists like
Iggy Azalea and
A$AP Rocky, followed by a string of original singles including the
Airling collaboration "Give In," which topped viral charts in Australia and the U.S.
A native of Sydney,
Dunn was born into a deeply musical family, with both of his parents working as music teachers and four of his siblings also pursuing careers in music. A youth spent playing various instruments in local string and band ensembles provided a natural path to his later work as a multi-instrumentalist songwriter and producer. During his university days,
Dunn began to explore more electronic-oriented sounds, remixing and producing tracks for artists like
Feki and
GRMM, while finding his own voice as a singer after hearing
Bon Iver's
For Emma, Forever Ago.
He first gained widespread attention with 2016's
BIMYOU, an EP with covers (
A$AP Rocky's "Fuckin' Problems" and
Iggy Azalea's "Fancy") arranged in a gentle indie folk style. Original singles like "Scattered" and the
Airling collaboration "Give In" followed, marking a more indie electronic style and heightened success on streaming platforms. Following Australian tour support slots for acts like
Goldfrapp and
Broods,
Dunn returned in 2018 with his second EP,
Isic Tutor. ~ Timothy Monger
