As with everything Teodor Currentzis conducts, this Beethoven Symphony No. 7 bears the Greek-Russian artist’s imprint on every note. Throughout, the music moves from the almost inaudible to chords that are presented with whiplash precision and impact. Scrutinized, weighed up, and refreshed, this is interpretation at its most exciting. Working with his hyper-responsive, handpicked, Saint Petersburg-based ensemble, MusicAeterna, Currentzis exhibits remarkable attention to detail, making for a thrilling performance. This Seventh really dances, especially in the third movement scherzo, while the finale revels in the music’s inexorable momentum. Full of character, this is a notable performance.
