The Colloredo Serenade, K. 203, and Divertimento, K. 251, are far from the most well-known examples of either of these forms in
Mozart's output. Still, they are no less deserving of a well-thought-out performance and quality recording than any of his other compositions. That is precisely the treatment they are given in this performance by the
Scottish Chamber Orchestra under the direction of
Alexander Janiczek, who also serves as soloist. These two works were likely composed for performance at outdoor events, not as formal concert pieces. As such it would be a mistake to treat them as austerely as a symphony or with as much weight and importance as an opera. The
SCO steers clear of this pitfall and instead offers performances filled with carefree lightness and joviality. Its technique as an ensemble is extremely refined and elegant without being overly delicate. It produces a highly appealing sound, with bright, crisp strings, and warm woodwinds that pleasantly blend into the texture of the music.
Janiczek's solos are equally refined without any air of pretentiousness; as previous leader of the ensemble from 1999-2002, he is right at home producing a style and tone that ideally blend with the orchestra. For listeners seeking to expand their
Mozart collections, this album is sure to please.
