Born in Sweden in 1899, Yngve Sköld was somewhat of an anachronistic composer throughout his life. Beginning his compositional career at the dawn of the new century, he was nonetheless a Romantic at heart and often betrothed to classical styles in his works. Although he occasionally tried to branch out into the more chic harmonic languages of the time, these attempts tended to go against the grain for Sköld and found himself returning to his roots. The two primary works heard on this album represent two vastly different time periods in Sköld's output -- the cello sonata from 1927 and the horn suite from 1974 -- yet do not differ greatly from each other stylistically. Both are generally bland, rambling compositions, lacking much in the way of memorably melodies, harmonic diversity, or rhythmic interest. Cellist John Ehde and pianist Carl-Axel Dominique fail to add much to the lackluster score. Ehde's tone is thin and inconsistently in tune. The duo lacks a convincing musical vision, often playing without a noticeable direction or purpose. The Op. 71 horn suite is equally lacking in substantive musical content. Recorded in 1975 by the same duo that premiered the work, sound quality is problematic; horn player Ib Lanzky-Otto's microphone appears to have been placed quite close and every time he takes a breath -- and it really is every time -- listeners are subjected to what sounds like an urgent gasp for air.
